Advantages of F.O.

 

• With the small weakening, further distances can be reached.
• The large bandwidth leads to larger information capacity.
• Immune against EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) and RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) so no crosstalk.
• Very difficult to tap through the use of sources of light (safety).
• Because of the small dimensions and the light weight, less space is needed and it is easier to install the cable.
• F. O. is independent of the desired application; F. O. supports data, voice, video,..
• Because of the absence of earthing, there are no problems with strokes of lightning.

 

Small comparison: With two optical fibres, you can have about 32,256 telephone conversations at the same time. In order to realize this with copper cables, 1,400 pair of wires are needed.

Application possibilities of fibre optic

 

• Campus subsystem: The different buildings are coupled to each other by means of fibre optic.
• Backbone (Riser) system: In the building, fibre optic is laid from the different storeys to the central point in the computer room.
• Horizontal subsystems: Fiber to the desk! Each desk has its own fibre optic connection.
